The Quick Change Tool is a new skate tool designed to improve the speed and quality of life when changing or setting up a skateboard deck by retaining and aligning all mounting nuts as one piece.
The Quick Change Tool is NOT a complete skate tool. A separate driver is still required.
For the fastest board swaps, an electric driver is needed.
The Quick Change Tool is NOT intended to replace a typical skate tool; it is purpose-built for changing skateboard decks with less annoyance and more speed.
Tired of trying to thread those tiny nuts onto the bolts while holding the truck and board?
Do you get frustrated when you drop your nuts into Narnia?
Need to change or set up a deck faster?
This is for you.
Picture a pro skateboarder in a competition. Maybe that's you? Maybe that's who you want to be?
Either way, let's say you're doing pretty good, had a good first run, but the competition is steep & run 2 doesn't go as well; you end it early by snapping your tail.
What are the options?
1. Set up a new board? Impossible...in this format? Yeah right! Changing a deck takes too long, and you've got only a few minutes until your next run.
2. Grab a friend's board? A friend in need is a friend indeed. They're a great skater, but their setup is way different than your own; you can try to make it work.
3. Luckily, you came prepared with a 2nd setup; you've been skating it on and off for some time just for this moment...although it HAS always turned a little different...but you're pretty used to it at this point, and it's the best chance you've got.
In conclusion, 1 is impossible, and 2 & 3 are OK, but they're not the same. And we all know it.
The Quick Change Tool is here to make option 1 possible.
Fresh Deck. That's it.
No special setup is needed to use the Quick Change Tool, and there is no additional hardware needed on your board.
Ok, so you don't skate competitions, cool, but you're still setting up a deck every few days, if not more.
Sure, setting up a new deck is a process; maybe you sort of like it... and maybe you just want to skate.
The Quick Change Tool works for both.
With this tool, gripping a board should be the longest step in the set up process.
Now let's say you're over a certain age... no age in particular; you're still shredding. You don't care about power tools. You've got the ol' craftsman screwdriver and all the time in the world, and you enjoy setting up a new board...except for that one part when it comes time to deal with those tiny nuts under the trucks. When you have to thread the nuts on those bolts in that little area near the pivot cup. Your fat fingers are definitely going to be dropping those stupid nuts. Then you have to go figure out where it went... it could be anywhere! Heaven forbid it rolled under something! Better have extras!
The Quick Change Tool holds all the nuts aligned and together as one manageable fixture.
Maybe you're not a pro, and you're not old yet. You're a distribution company!
Setting up completes all day to ship out.
Time is money.
What's your fastest time to set up a board?
It can likely be faster.
Tools required:
- Quick Change Tool
- Manual or Electric driver
1. Slide the Quick Change Tool between the truck hanger and baseplate so that socket holes on the Tool are aligned with the mounting nuts.
> The Tool can be placed on from either direction, nose side or tail side.
> The Tool should be placed onto all 4 nuts at the same time.
> Due to the rotation of the nuts on the board, each socket hole in the Tool may not initially align with every nut on the board. This is not an issue.
2. Apply pressure to the Quick Change Tool against the nuts as you use your driver from the top side of the deck to unscrew each bolt.
> As you begin to unscrew a bolt, the nut will register and seat itself into the socket hole on the Tool.
3. Repeat on all bolts.
4. Remove the truck: The nuts should now be retained by the Quick Change Tool.
> Due to the magnets and geometry of the Tool, the nuts will not fall out once seated into the tool. You are now able to handle it as one piece.
> If needed, you can use a bolt from the back side to push the nuts out of the tool.
5. Install the truck onto your new board. (You probably already know how to do this.)
> Move the bolts to your new board and position the truck on the bolts. Then align the Quick Change Tool with the bolts and tighten.
> Keep pressure on the Tool until all bolts are fastened. Pushing the Tool flat against the baseplate keeps the nuts from crossthreading.
> Once 2 bolts are aligned, the other 2 are also aligned.
6. Remove the Quick Change Tool.
7. Repeat steps 1-6 with the other truck and you’re ready to get back out there!
Tip: Getting nuts in and out of the Quick Change Tool...
If you're setting up a new board with new hardware, you'll need to load nuts in the Tool in order to set up your board. The easiest way to do this is to stand the nuts up on their edge on top of the magnets, then push them into the socket holes from the outside in. This typically keeps them pretty well lined up; otherwise, you could get the nut stuck sideways in the socket hole, and then you'll have to push it out from the other side.
To remove nuts from the Tool, you can push them out from the backside with an extra piece of hardware.
Loading nuts into the Tool
Tip: One Tool is fast, but two are faster...
The instructions on this page cover the steps for using a single tool to change a deck, but using 2 tools at the same time (1 tool per truck) is overall faster.
In theory the fastest possible way to swap would be to pre-load the new deck with fresh bolts and have 4 Quick Change Tools:
2 for removing only and 2 for installing only.
The ones for installing will have new nuts pre-loaded so the entire setup gets a fresh set of hardware.
Similarly, 2 bolts are faster than 4...
If you only skate 2 bolts per truck, good news: less than 1-minute board swaps are very possible with this configuration!
Q: What if I don't have power tools?
If you're looking for something to hate on, here it is!
The fastest swaps will ONLY be possible with power tools.
The Quick Change Tool still provides handling benefits over other skate tools, but it may not be the fastest way to change a board if you are 100% manual.
A ratcheting screwdriver is a good pair with the Quick Change Tool for manual changes.
However, if you need to tighten a kingpin or fiddle with a wheel, you'll need an additional tool.
Q: Do I need special hardware?
A: NO! The tool works with all standard hardware; however, there are some clear advantages to certain types.
For power tool use, Allen bolts are better than Phillips
- It's not a matter of preference; Allen bolts register easier and are harder to strip than Phillips bolts. Which makes Allen bolts faster and more reliable when using an electric driver.
- Look up "1/8" Impact Hex Bits Set" on Amazon; you can buy a 10-pack of these bits for an impact driver, coming out to $1 per bit.
Shorter bolts are faster
- Bolts can pass through the tool while assembling or disassembling, but it is easier to get the tool into place when the bolts don't stick out over the top of the nuts very much.
- Using 1" bolts with no riser works fine, but 7/8" causes fewer hang-ups. 1" hardware is used in the original demo video.
Q: Does it work on all trucks?
A: Yes! The Quick Change Tool has worked with every truck brand it has been tested on.
The Tool is currently only made with the "New School" bolt pattern, but a version for the "Old School" bolt pattern and potentially others will be added to the lineup in the future.
Q: Is it 3D printed? Is that strong enough?
A: Yes! and yes!
The tool is designed and manufactured in the USA, with USA-manufactured 3D printing filament. Time was spent exploring manufacturing methods, and after thorough research, 3D printing was the most economical manufacturing process for this tool at this stage.
It's not unbreakable, but the Tool has been designed to be strong enough where it counts.
If the Tool is used as intended, it should not break.
Tip: Keep track of your nose...
When your truck is removed, the Tool typically stays with the truck; it sits in the area between the baseplate and hanger, ready for reassembly.
So when using 2 Tools to change your deck, if you place both Tools on from the nose side, you'll always know which truck is the front and which is the back.
